Training Progress

Guinness is doing so well! His stays are at about 45 seconds for sitting and 1 minute for downs. Not too far to go to the 1-minute and 3-minute mark! My friends and neighbors are so impressed with him because I let him out in the morning off lead, he goes to potty, and comes right back. Everyone is so surprised that he doesn't run off! I don't think it even crosses his mind though. Speaking of running off, he understands the "come" command perfectly and runs right back to me when I call him.

Very Late Post

Guinness is doing great on sitting, staying, coming, heeling, and downing! Almost got all of the major components of the CD down, we're starting classes soon though to finesse all of his skills!

Training

I just thought I'd go over my training process a little bit...
I DO NOT use pinch collars or E-Collars for ANYTHING!
I am not clicker training Guinness because I prefer traditional training methods. Right now Guinness has learned "sit," "down" and "heel." His sits are beautiful!
Next we will be working on "stay" and "come."

Puppies that are sold with similar training sell for $3,500 to $5,000 depending on what age they are sold at. This cost covers the price of the puppy, the vet costs, board, training, and titling costs. Overall, buying a trained puppy saves lots of time and energy. No getting up in the middle of the night to take out a whining puppy, no barking in the crate, and no hours of training!

7/3/10

Guinness is an expert at heeling now! He sits every time I stop walking and is even perfectly straight in his sits. Very impressive for such a young puppy. I'm going to try to put up a video on YouTube soon.

I hope to have his CD title on him before he goes to his new forever home, which should to around Christmas time. If I also have time, I'd like to accomplish his RN title before then as well.

Guinness is sleeping in a crate every night, and doesn't cry. He's gotten very good about letting me know when he needs to go potty- a huge asset to his future family. He has traveled about 4,000 miles with us to dog shows and doesn't make a fuss at all in the car! When he is finished with his training, he should be very versatile in any situation.

Progress

Guinness is a pro at sitting now! He does it every I get anything out that resembles food. We are now working on the "down" command, and making good progress. By the end of the week he should have that command under his belt as well!

He learned how to swim today also. He didn't enjoy it the first time he got in but was ready to jump in after watching his uncle Hudson retrieve the bumper!

Guinness's First Dog Show

This past weekend was the Olive Branch Kennel Club dog show, and Guinness went with us. He practiced walking on a lead, sleeping in a crate, and socializing with big dogs. At the end of the weekend he thought he was all grown-up! He didn't have a single accident in his crate, and he walks on a lead perfectly. He's getting much better about barking in his crate at night. He loves to play with the big dogs, especially Kylie the Australian Shepherd.

We have been working on "sit" today and he seems to catch on very quickly! He did well on the grooming table this morning as well, and didn't even try to jump off as I cut his nails and brushed him.

I want Guinness to be acclimated to the noises and smells of every dog show arena, whether it is conformation, obedience, or agility. I want him to be the perfect all-around dog for someone who wants to have a successful start to their own career or just wants the perfect companion.

Guinness!

Prism's Irish Brewed in Dublin, "Guinness" is out of the Molly x Finn litter. He is a handsome young boy, and will be available after all of his training is finished.
By the time his training is done, I hope to have finished his CGC title, his RN title, and his CD title.
Guinness will be the perfect companion! He has a fantastic retrieving instinct and there's no telling what this boy will accomplish- the sky's the limit!

If you are interested in giving Guinness a forever home after all of his training is complete, please contact me at maxieb@uga.edu
